This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
