European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
