Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces growing in power within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of characters who will branch out from the main group to undertake their own adventure, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

With 13 cast members, it was obvious from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

According to the DM, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might appear mismatched, but the actions of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the party knows exactly where to go next after a intense first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing started the story’s plot—used the enemy for his own means, invading the secret base, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The traitor then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, beyond the city, with Cyd close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the group enter areas they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character pledged a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that govern the setting for a multiple motives, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This results in them no alternative but to journey toward Timmony in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

According to the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Explorers and Strategists parties.

Viewers can anticipate learning which players will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
